Chicory is a very popular coffee substitute without that caffeine that seems to bother some of us & adds fiber to foods as well. It comes from the dandelion family and is very beneficial to our bodies.
It contains anti-inflammatory properties as it is rich in polyphenols. It invigorates & strengthens the digestive & urinary systems. It helps to restore the body's cells to their original condition & boosts the body's defense systems while also helping to cleanse the liver!! It's a good addition to a diabetic diet as well. It contains a protein called adiponectin which regulates glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown. Results of a recent study suggest the extract could delay or prevent the early onset of diabetes as well as improve bowel functions due to it's fibrous makeup.
Chicory contains inulin which is a prebiotic. It is highly fermentable by the friendly bacteria in the gut. It can help promote growth of helpful probiotics in the stomach & may enhance calcium absorption. It helps to treat eczema and can regulate the thyroid. It's high in triglycerides. Relieves gas & bloating, improves cholesterol, it's a natural plant based carbohydrate that can't be broken down by human digestive enzymes. Chicory contains bitters which improve the digestion process. Drinking it on a regular basis can rid your system of excess water buildup & uric acid buildup. It can also have a calming & regulating effect on the heart & increases the flow of bile.
Avoid if you have gallstones!
