Slippery Elm Bark -- Beneficial Nutritive
Slippery Elm Bark is the king of herbs for digestion. It is the inner bark of the tree & can grow up to 50 feet! It's also known as Red Elm, Moose Elm or Indian Elm. It has been used as an herbal remedy in Native American culture since the 19th century. It relieves a number of digestive issues and is rich in what we call mucilage, which is a substance that provides a coating when mixed with liquid. It also falls into the demulcent category which means....it coats the intestines & lining of the stomach & can soothe irritated bowels. With that protective coating, it helps to sooth & protect irritated body tissues including the mouth, throat, stomach & intestines. This makes it ideal for sore throats, coughs, GERD, bladder issues, Chron's, IBS, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, UTI's & diarrhea.
Lately it has become a very popular treatment for breast cancer & can also help to control the negative side effects of conventional breast cancer treatments. It is an anti-inflammatory & can boost the immune system. This gentle herb can also decrease urinary tract irritation, relieve acid reflux, relieve toothaches & gum infections. It contains high levels of iron, encourages blood flow which can result in improving circulation. Slippery Elm can help relieve skin ailments as well.
There are no known side effects, as it is a mainly a mucilage & is nutrient dense. It is so gentle to the digestive system, it has been fed to the elderly or children if they are having digestive difficulties. It's also a wholesome food for the weak, convalescent & even pets.
It's a great addition to Herbmama's Detox Blend AKA Essiac!!
