It's not inherently bad & your body needs it to build cells, Vit. D & certain hormones. Those foods are also high in saturated & trans fats & those foods can cause the liver to make an excess of cholesterol. so it's that added production of it than can cause a health issue as can smoking, kidney disease, diabetes, genetics, inactivity & hypothyroidism.

Cholesterol does not dissolve in water. To help it move through the blood, the liver makes lipoproteins. These are made from fat & protein. Many don't even realize these are issues until they develop serious complications, which is why you should have it checked & get a routine cholesterol screening.

So all that being said...why is it important?? Well it circulates in the blood. so as it increases in the blood, so does the health risk. There are 2 types of cholesterol LDL (low density lipoproteins) the bad kind & HDL (high density lipoproteins) the good kind. This cholesterol, along with other substances can form a thick, hard deposit on the inside of the arteries also called plaque & causes them to be less flexible, which is called arteriosclerosis. If a clot forms & blocks one of these narrowed arteries, the result could be heart attack of stroke.

The HDL helps return the LDL back to your liver to be removed from your body. This helps to prevent it from building up in your arteries.

There are several types of statins that one can take which can have negative side effects. There are also other mediations they can give you that can have bad side effects.

There are diet, lifestyle changes you can make too along with certain supplements & foods that can help lower your cholesterol levels. For example: garlic, hawthorn, astragalus, red yeast rice, psyllium, ground flaxseeds, rosemary, turmeric, ginger, holy basil, yarrow, artichoke leaf extract, fenugreek seeds & leaves.

Concerning one's diet: limit foods that are high in cholesterol, saturated fats, trans fats. Chose lean protein such as chicken, fish & legumes. Eat a wide variety of fruits, veggies & whole grains. Choose baked, broiled, steamed, grilled or roasted foods instead of fried foods. Avoid fast food & high sugared pre-packaged food whenever possible.

According to Harvard Health, these foods can help to lower cholesterol. Whole grains such as oats, barley, oat bran, beans, eggplant, okra, almonds & other assorted nuts, fruits, fatty fish that are loaded with omega 3's & of course lots of fiber.

So, in conclusion, on can make dramatic changes to their lifestyle & possibly make great improvements to their cholesterol levels. The answer isn't always in prescriptions.
Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-75353435530927829012023-07-10T09:46:00.001-07:002023-07-10T09:49:23.300-07:00Flower Essences...Know What They Are???

Flower therapy, essence therapy, flower essences, flower remedies are all the names given to this alternative therapy that is based on the idea that flowers contain a healing vibrational energy. Not to be confused with aromatherapy which is all about essential oils. It's a form of herbal medicine, but it's actually in the homeopathic line.

This whole system was developed in the 1930's by Edward Bach who was a British physician. According to him, the energy of flowers can balance one's emotions which can bring about mental, physical & spiritual wellness. They may also help with anxiety, pain, immunity, depression & types of psychological disorders.

It's fairly simple to make these essences. The flowers are submerged in natural spring water. The water is then boiled or placed in the sun with the belief the sun helps to extract the energy of the flowers...or adds to it? The water is then filtered & preserved with brandy. The finished product contains no flowers. One can add crystals to them as well. They can also be made without alcohol.

Even though 'they' say there is no scientific evidence these essences work, they come in several types. Pastilles, gum, liquid melts, lozenges, fizzy tablets, sprays & dropper bottles. There are also skin creams & bath salts available.

There are flower essence therapists & practitioners that can provide these floral essences as well as a wide range of providers including massage therapists, naturopathic doctors, holistic nurses, acupuncturists, reiki practitioners & the like.

You may have heard of one of the most popular ones called "Rescue Remedy".

They are safe for everyone including children, pets, pregnant women, the elderly & of course plants!
Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-41032731286454961962023-07-10T09:29:00.002-07:002023-07-10T09:31:00.679-07:00Ginger Essential Oil...

Ginger essential oil is also known as 'the oil of empowerment'. U.S. The berries from this palm are commonly used for men's health, specifically for prostate health, balancing hormones & helping with hair loss. It's loaded with antioxidants & is an anti-inflammatory.

Hair loss is common in men & can be caused by a variety of factors. Genetics, hormone changes, certain medical conditions & certain medication such as blood thinners & stimulants.

Studies indicate saw palmetto may help to block the activity of the enzyme which converts testosterone into another sex hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that is linked to hair loss. It also helps to regulate the testosterone levels by decreasing this enzyme. Because this DHT is also involved in the enlargement of the prostate, in decreasing this DHT level, it can also improve prostate health & BPH.

Saw palmetto can help to improve urinary function associated with BPH or benign prostate hyperplasia. This condition causes an enlargement of the prostate gland which can decrease urine flow. BPH can be cause by hormonal changes, deteriorating blood vessels & a zinc deficiency.

This berry can help with prostate health as well. The prostate is a small gland between the bladder & the penis. It's responsible for maintaining sperm health. Research shows saw palmetto can help support prostate health & can help to prevent BPH & prostate cancer, along with urinary symptoms & inflammation related to BPH.

Benefits also include treating colds, coughs, sore throat, asthma, chronic bronchitis, migraines, increases urine flow, promotes relaxation & enhances sexual drive. A natural remedy for impotence.

Active ingredients in these berries contain fatty acids, plant sterols, flavonoids & polysaccharides which can reduce inflammation & help to strengthen the immune system. It inhibits testosterone from binding to & stimulating prostate cells, which can reduce a surplus of prostatic cells & reduce prostate enlargement. It can also help to destroy cancer cells.

In the elderly or women, saw palmetto also strengthens urinary organs & can be a natural remedy for kidney stones.

Those taking blood thinners, pregnant or nursing, have underlying health conditions be sure to consult a physician before starting on saw palmetto. Some side effects could be headaches, dizziness, nausea or constipation.
Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-21318685966507275932023-05-23T10:20:00.000-07:002023-05-23T10:20:11.490-07:00Removing Alcohol From Tinctures

Sometimes people want all the benefits from a tincture, but don't want the alcohol. Weather it be because of giving to children, AA members, religious reasons or that you simply don't want or like the alcohol.

There is an overnight or day method which is really simple and doesn't harm the beneficial herbal ingredients in the tincture.

Take a clean cup, preferably glass, and squirt the tincture drops, from the bottle's eyedropper, into the cup and then cover with a clean cloth.

Leave in a warm place overnight OR you can even do this during the day if you wish for about 12-24 hrs. During this time, the alcohol should have evaporated. Add some clean, filtered water and stir so that any dehydrated herbs from the tincture is reabsorbed into the water. Drink up!!

REMEMBER: The more you put in the glass, the longer it will take for it to evaporate.

TIP: Keep the bulk of your tincture with the alcohol and just "de-alcohol" the amount you need daily and the tincture should keep for years.

NEVER BOIL THE TINCTURE!! It changes the chemical structure of the herb & often kills valuable nutrients

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-1930368861243196682022-09-21T08:36:00.002-07:002022-09-21T08:38:55.554-07:00A Word....or 2....on Supplements

This topic is one of my favorite 'soap boxes' to stand on....so here goes!

Go to any store now and pick up a OTC (Over The Counter) supplement. I don't care what store, what supplement you choose. You choose what you want by the name & picture on the front, right?? Most don't even bother to look at the back where the ingredient are listed. So here's the deal -- the listing on the back says each capsule/dosage is so many milligrams (mg). You read the ingredients & there are these fillers, binders, needless ingredients listed as well. So if each capsule has say 500 mg of said herb, how can there be that amount in each capsule if all those other fillers, etc. are in there?? The capsule would be huge if that were the case. Most capsules in the OTC supplements are '00' or double ott which holds between 500-600 mg per capsule. Bottom line - if there's fillers in the capsule too, how can there be that amount in the capsule that the bottle states????

Needless ingredients can include rice flour, magnesium steareate, cellulose, silicon dioxide and numerous more that can cause different side effects & can interfere with said supplements effect on what you are trying to accomplish by taking this supplement.

When you are searching for supplements, try to find the cleanest one possible. Your body doesn't need all the extra 'stuff'. A wholesome tea or tincture or spice might be the better way to go, who knows?!!

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-33695204028678507942022-06-01T10:35:00.004-07:002022-06-01T10:39:43.788-07:00Hawthorn Berries....

Hawthorne berries are also called thorn apple or may tree. They are revered by Buddhist monks as a mystical source of nutrition.

Lion's Mane or Hericium erinaceus is one of a variety of mushrooms that have stupendous healing capabilities. It tastes kind of like a lobster with it's mild flavor and actually looks like a lion's 'mane'. Although similar to the healing abilities of other mushrooms, they have great properties and are anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, including immuno- stimulating & wound healing. But their main healing comes with their brain & nerve support! This includes cognitive function, memory, dementia, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders & nerve regeneration & it can shrink or stop tumor growth!! Very few foods or herbs can stimulate nerve regeneration.

This mushroom contains more than 35 beneficial polysaccharides. These polysaccharides can help treat or prevent cancer, gastric ulcers, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, liver injury and a host of neurogenerative diseases. Some active compounds may delay what's called neuronal death in neuro-degenerative diseases and ischemic stroke, Parkinson's & Alzheimer's.

Lion's mane helps to regenerate nerves and can stimulate the activity of the nerve growth factor. Separate research shows taking lion's mane can improve cognitive function in as little as 12 weeks. Compounds in this mushroom are known to be able to bypass the blood-brain barrier which is why they can help with cognitive issues. This has had a revolutionary impact on neuro-degenerative diseases by increasing neuron growth. It's possible to slow or reverse cell degeneration in the brain. According to a 2012 study in Malaysia, they can actually regenerate damaged nerve cells!

These mushrooms contain at least 32 bioactive compounds. It's hard to pinpoint the vitamin & mineral content, but it's believed to be a rich source of potassium, zinc, iron & selenium.

I get my lion's mane mushrooms from Adamsmushrooms.com, it's a great source. I know there are other sources to get them, all you have to do is search.

Sources of information: Green Med Info & Dr. Axe.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-3271626660772887532021-09-22T09:41:00.004-07:002021-09-22T09:46:15.611-07:00Essential Oils & the Belly Button

While I've heard of putting essential oils in the belly button, personally I've never tried it...until recently. Now that I have, I must say -- why didn't I ever do this before??!!

Essential oils only take about 20 minutes to get into the bloodstream through our skin. There is thought to be a 'gland' called the Pechoti in the belly button, although there is no actual evidence of this.

This 'Pechoti Method' is derived from the Ayurvedic medicinal practice in India, which focuses on the connection between the physical & the spiritual health. While I won't go into the actual biology of weather the belly button continues to function after the umbilical cord is severed, there is evidence that there are multiple veins still in tact & while they might constrict, they do not become obsolete, rather they are connected to almost every organ of the body.

Just because no evidence of this gland has been actually found, there's many beneficial factors that can be attributed to applying essential oil into one's belly button, even CBD oil. A couple drops of a good therapeutic essential oil...diluted....then massaged into that area certainly can't hurt. One doesn't want to push too hard on that area as there a a large amount of nerves in that region.

This simple method can enhance digestion, calm the mind (especially if one uses lavender),is able to reduce joint pain and it can improve reproductive health.

Some practitioners consider the belly button a 'reset' button and one can treat almost any physical or emotional ailment through this. Some contend it stimulates that all important vagus nerve (which is a topic for another discussion).

So weather or not there is proven scientific evidence this works, why not try it. Either a nourishing carrier oil or essential oils, using with caution, what can it hurt???

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-7812752118796008762021-08-09T09:06:00.000-07:002021-08-09T09:06:35.322-07:00Is MSG Dangerous????

MSG is short for monosodium glutamate as most of us already know. It is a common food additive that enhances flavor. It's a big controversial subject & most government sources, including the FDA, say it's safe. So let's see what we can do to wade through the information that's out there.

MSG is derived from the amino acid glutamate, which is a type of protein & is normally found in fruits & veggies. It is one of the most abundant amino acids in nature. The body uses it & needs it too. It is a non-essential amino acid which means your body can make it. It's found in nearly all foods & provides several functions to the human body. They combine sodium & glutamic acid, also known as sodium salt. This acid is made by fermenting starches, but there is no chemical difference between the glutamic acid in MSG & in natural foods. BUT the glutamic acid in MSG may be easier for the body to absorb because it's not bound inside big protein molecules that the body needs to break down. Glutamic acid functions as a neuro-transmitter in the brain. It stimulates nerve cells to help relay it's signal.

It is true that increased levels of glutamate activity can cause harm & large doses can raise blood levels of glutamate. However, dietary glutamate shouldn't have much effect on the brain as it can't cross the blood-brain barrier. Some claim that MSG leads to excessive glutamate in the brain & excessive nerve cell stimulation. This is why it's labeled as an excitotoxin. So far, no compelling evidence has been found that MSG can act as an excitotoxin when consumed in normal amounts. Eating large amounts of MSG can cause the glutamate to cross that blood-brain barrier, interacting with neurons to cause swelling & cell death.

The big factor here is that MSG is found in so many unhealthy processed foods that lack essential nutrients for the body. Since it's processed in the body very differently, it's believed this fast increase is what causes the side effects. It is claimed to cause: free radical formation, metabolic syndrome, asthma, flushing, headaches, brain damage, high blood pressure, hives, burning sensations in the mouth, head & neck & even cancer. It's also traditionally found in Asian foods.

It's because of the synthetic manipulation & processing of glutamate which produces a form not found in nature. Recreating a product of nature tends to have less than desirable results as we all know.

Are you highly sensitive? Go to msgmyth.com to get all the other names it goes by as they continue to sneak it into our food systems.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-5721997482097287292021-07-28T09:04:00.002-07:002021-07-28T09:04:33.897-07:00Remember Goldenseal????

Do you remember goldenseal??? Well it's still around & the research on it has been quite astounding for all it's capabilities. Back in the day, it became very popular after rumors spread that taking it can help block a positive test for illegal drugs....as it were, there was no scientific evidence to prove this. Due to it's over harvesting, it almost became extinct & was the reason prices sky rocketed on it. But it is still one of the top selling herbal products in the U.S..

This amazing herb goes back to the NA times when they used it for many issues like respiratory, digestive, earaches, eye complaints, liver & even heart issues.

Goldenseal's latin name...'Hydrastis Canadensis' . The root & rhizome are the most wanted as they have a rich chemical composition. The alkaloids that are most beneficial are berberine, canadine & hydrastine which are most responsible for the health benefits. It's also known as orange root, yellow root or yellow puccoon. It's a perennial herb that belongs to the buttercup family.

The taste & smell are unpleasant & even acrid, yet considered a super herb by many. It is considered a trophorestorative, whish is a nutritive restorer. It's loaded with essential minerals & vitamins like iron, calcium, maganese & vitamins A, C, E & B complex just to name a few. It also contains chlorogenic acid, which contain the same health benefits that are found in coffee & teas. It's also a bitter, so it's good for digestive issues.

So let's get on with how it can help the body. It can boost the immune system, help fight cancer, it's an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, appetite stimulant, a natural anti-biotic, an astringent & an anti-inflammatory. It soothes & loosens up mucous membranes. Has been known to be effective against MRSA, candida, pink eye, high blood pressure, a tonic for the heart, shingles & can even reduce bad cholesterol. It's an antioxidant & an anti-fungal. It can help with warts, cold sores, and is a diuretic. It can be made into a mouthwash to help with gum issues. Can be made into a douche to help with yeast infections too. It can help with parasite issues & some STD's. It's also a blood cleanser and an anti-tumor. Goldenseal can also inhibit the growth of H. pylori, which is a type of bacteria which can lead to ulcers & more. Only small amounts are needed for most treatments.

Due to it's high cost, some products claiming to contain goldenseal may contain Chinese gold thread, oregon grape root, barberry, yellow root or Chinese goldenseal all which contain berberine, but not hydrastine or canadine. So make sure you read your labels carefully.

The dosage recommendations are .5-10 grams of the powder daily. Liquid extract should be limited to 40 drops in 2 oz. of water or juice 3-5 times daily. So, yes, small amounts.

Goldenseal should not be given to children or infants. There are no known drug interactions. Pregnant & nursing mothers should avoid it as well.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-75461016536886180892021-07-14T09:49:00.001-07:002021-07-14T09:49:24.522-07:00Medicinal Mushrooms

Lately our fungus friends have been in the spotlight more than normal. Research has shown they are huge in the fight against cancer & other illnesses.

Touted as a super food they produce Vit. B & D that most plants lack. They are low in calories & sodium with good amounts of protein which include soluble & insoluble fiber. They are loaded with fungal polysaccharides & immunomodulating properties which affects the functioning of the immune system. Fungi are more related to animals than plants and are considered intelligent. Mushrooms can't product energy from sunlight as plants do. Instead, they use enzymes to break down organic matter into their natural environment. They turn dead organic into carbs, proteins & cellulose.

Of course, for best results one should eat a variety of them daily....tea, dehydrate, tinctures, foods....anyway to get more of them in YOU!!! Oyster, shitake & maitake can be eaten fresh. Others such as reishi need to be made into a tea or soup because of it's bitterness. All mushrooms can be dried & crushed into a powder & can be taken in capsule form. It's recommended you take the mushrooms with Vit. C. It seems the Vit. C helps increase the body's absorption rate for polysaccharides.

Mushrooms are anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial & high in anti-oxidants. They contain a lot of beta glucan which stimulates the immune system. They can contain 50 or more polysaccharides across different varieties. Shrooms can fight cancer, leukemia, tumors, boosts the immune system....from the common cold to HIV. They help regulate anti-body production, increase DNA/RNA in bone marrow. Promote heart health. Help to lower cholesterol & inflammation. Improve energy levels. Reduce lactic acid. They help to improve brain health: focusing, cognitive functions. Cause production of nerve growth factors. They can help to lower & regular blood sugar levels & increase sensitivity of insulin receptors.

The top 8 mushrooms I found in my research are:

Reishi: Have the most medicinal uses & the longest history. The red reishi is thought to be the most potent & effective. This mushroom should be used in soups or teas or can be dried & turned into powder form or an extract.

Chaga: Grown exclusively on birch trees & can look like charcoal, inside this fungi is a bright orange color.

Turkey Tail: A "shelf" mushroom that are colorful & fan shaped so they look like a spread out turkey's tail. Quite common, they can be found in almost any forest.

Maitake: Nicknamed hen of the woods. Unlike some others on this list, these taste great, have a good texture & a mild flavor.

Lion's Mane: These grow very large & the taste is similar to lobster. It tastes great & when cut open is similar to the texture of cauliflower.

Cordyceps: If you can get past the fact that this grows from mummified bugs, it's got some fantastic health benefits.

Shitake: Now these you have probably seen in the supermarkets. Goes great in soups or stir frys. It's mostly found in Europe, Asia & the Mediterranean. You might be more familiar with it as the candy. The Latin name Glychrrhiza glabra is the most common variety. Glychrrhiza translates to "sweet root" & is 30-50 times sweeter than white cane sugar. Today, it's sweet flavor is mimicked by anise seed. Authentic licorice is more commonly known as "black licorice".

The leaves have anti-microbial benefits and have been proven to be effective in fighting off bacteria such as candida & staph. They have found 100s of various components in the root & over 150 more in the Chinese variety.

Rich in flavonoids, anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories, stilbenoids (phytochemicals) & coumarins. Contains triterpenoids, which usually contain steroidal substances.

One has probably seen the term 'glycyrrhizin' removed on bottles of the herbs, etc. Actually, it's triterpenoid glycyrrhizin. Because of extended use, this particular compound can increase blood pressure, cause kidney or liver issues & can cause issues with pregnant women.

Licorice root can help with pain relief, PMS, menopause, coughs, sore throat, immune system, adrenal fatigue, leaky gut, heartburn or acid reflux. It's an anti-spasmodic, has an estrogen-like effect & is good for hot flashes.

The triterpenoid content is anti-viral, so it can help with HIV, flu, hepatitis & the immune system.

Glycyrrhizin contains over 300 compounds and some are potent in anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories & anti-microbials. It can help with peptic ulcers, bronchitis, hepatitis C, asthma, congestion, strep throat, skin infections, respiratory & digestive issues & gum disease.

Choose glycyrrhizin free as that component is responsible for all the side effects. The promise of a potent cancer fighter is quickly coming to the front lines.

Do not take long term. Never consume if have kidney or liver disease or if pregnant. Limit to 1-10 mg/day to limit the glycyrrhizin. One should only take it for about 4-6 weeks with a break thereafter.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-25664901989120994692021-06-16T09:31:00.002-07:002021-06-16T09:31:58.438-07:00Hypo Thyroid vs Hyper Thyroid

Such confusion in this area. I've done some research and tried to clear it up a little bit,

at least in my mind & hopefully in yours as well.

The thyroid produces T3 & T4 hormones. Too much thyroid hormone in the body is called thyrotoxicosis. Some thyroid conditions are looked at as auto-immune disorders, which continues to rise. So in these cases, the immune system attacks the thyroid. 1 in 10 are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder. Many thyroid issues also test positive for heavy metal toxicity & are suspected at causing imbalances. Cilantro can detoxify the body of heavy metals. To make it more confusing, one thyroid issue can mimic the other such as with Hashimoto's or Grave's disease.

The most common treatment for underactive thyroid is synthroid, a synthetic chemical version of the hormone. It's also given to people who have had radioactive iodine which is used to destroy the thyroid gland. The Armour Nature-Throidthyroid for hypothyroid, beta blockers & antithyroid meds for hyperthyroid patients come with an abundance of side effects. The prescription tapazole stops the thyroid from making the hormone.

So which one, if any, do you have??? This one doesn't produce enough of the hormone and can lead to the following symptoms: excessive fatigue, unexplained or rapid weight gain, muscle cramps, slow heart rate, sensitive to cold temps, constipation, depression, brain fog, decreased memory, nail issues, muscle weakness, thinning hair, achiness & menstrual or fertility issues.

There are a plethora of symptoms for each one of these imbalances, did we ever think it could be that

many? These few ideas and more can help manage the symptoms of an imbalanced thyroid.

Here's some essential oils that can help with this too: frankincense, geranium, roman chamomile, ginger, lemon, cilantro & tangerine.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-24143272021307336512021-06-14T09:34:00.001-07:002021-06-14T09:34:35.738-07:00Patchouli....Remember When????

This timeless aromatic plant is believed to come from a Hindi word meaning 'to scent'. The leaves were used to protect fabrics when they were shipped from the East during the 1800's. There are three species of patchouli: Pogostemon cablin, Pogostemon heyneanus & Pogostemun hortensis. The 'cablin' one is the most popular & is the one cultivated for it's essential oil. It's therapeutic qualities are superior to the other two. It's part of the mint family & only the leaves are used. The scent is a warm, musky, deep woody scent. It is of course associated with the hippie culture way back when, but has been in use since the 1800's, especially in Europe.

It's indispensable to the fragrance industry. It's derived through steam distillation from the leaves. There are so many more benefits to it than I ever thought. I just love it's scent!!!

Patchouli is anti-microbial & research shows it's effective against 2 strains of the Staph family & 1 from the Salmonella family. It's an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiseptic & a mild sedative.

It's a great anti-oxidant especially where skin is concerned & is great for many skin conditions such as dermatitis, acne, dry & cracked skin. It's an insecticide & repellant for house flies, mosquitoes, termites & urban ants.

It can help with stress, anxiety & mental clarity. It can boost mood especially in dementia patients. Relieves depression, controls appetite, can help with grounding & balancing.

Patchouli blends well with other resins and floral essential oils. Never use it undiluted.

Don't use if you are taking blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or have recently or will have surgery.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-82114465629107345012021-06-14T09:00:00.002-07:002021-06-16T08:40:16.784-07:00Poppy....yes Poppy!!!!

This awesome poppy is the state flower of California & it's the first to blossom in the spring time!! It's not the poppy you think it is. It's a beautiful, medicinal flower that can help with many ailments.

The alkaloids in this poppy product a milder effect than opiates and are non-addictive with no dis-orienting side effects. Research has shown it contains a plethora of benefits. The medicinal applications today are largely due to its original uses by the Native Americans.

California poppy is a super nervine, which means it helps the whole nervous system, and a trophorestorative, which promotes nutrition uptake at the cellular level. It helps to relieve peripheral nerve pain, can help with sciatica & shingle pain, intestinal spasms, menstrual cramping, hypertension & nervous palpitations surrounding the heart.

It's a mild sedative, an anti-fungal, sleep aid & pain reliever. It can help with nervous disorders, headaches, back pain, arthritis, restless leg syndrome, muscle relaxer, anti-spasmodic, anxiety & diseases of the bladder & liver....but more research is needed in those two areas.

This poppy is non-addictive & non-narcotic. It can be safe & gentle for children.

Stop using it at least two weeks prior to surgery. Do not use if pregnant or breast feeding. Do not take for extended periods of time.

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-23048849167177127762021-06-09T08:45:00.002-07:002021-06-09T08:45:58.313-07:00Cinnamon....the Spice!!!

Cinnamon has been used as a medicine by the Chinese & Ayurvedic people for thousands of years. The benefits from this simple inexpensive spice are enormous. It used to be more valuable than gold, because of it's healing & preservative properties. It's mentioned in the Bible numerous times & the ancient Egyptians used it as a perfuming agent in their embalming ceremonies over 4,000 years ago.

There are 2 basic types of cinnamon: ceylon & cassia. Ceylon is known as the true cinnamon while cassia is the more common variety, but still referred to as cinnamon. Cassia is a darker brown-red in color with thicker sticks & a rougher texture than ceylon. After it gets extracted, it's dried, then strips are formed that curl into the rolls you are used to seeing. The rolls are then ground up to make the powder form. Roughly 95% of its oil is cinnamaldehyde, which gives the cassia cinnamon a strong flavor. Cassia contains a significant amount of coumarin, which is believed to be harmful in large amounts. This type of cinnamon is cheaper, but more widely used.

Cinnamon outranks the superfoods such as garlic & oregano, maybe even turmeric! It can be used as a natural food preservative.

It can help with blood pressure, heart disease & it's been shown to significantly increase sensitivity to the hormone insulin. If one is diabetic, you can take 1/2 - 2 tsp. of cinnamon daily to help lower your glucose levels.

Studies show it can help with Alzheimer's & Parkinson, but that area needs more research. It can, however inhibit the growth of bacteria including listeria & salmonella.

Cinnamon is anti-viral, an analgesic, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, it can stabalize blood sugar, is a digestive aid, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, rich in anti-oxidants & can even help to reduce cholesterol.

All in all this seems to be a pretty potent spice to add to anyone's daily diet, don't ya think???

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-41345814150770941662020-07-27T09:48:00.001-07:002021-06-14T08:43:57.241-07:00The Ins & Outs of Canola Oil

Are you on the fence as to weather canola oil is full of the healthful benefits they are saying?? Some say it's poison & contains the same substance as the warfare agent mustard gas, is responsible for most maladies from mad cow to blindness. Then again, some say it's one of the healthiest foods around as it contains high levels of omega 3's, low in saturated fat & excellent source of oleic acid.

It's the 3rd most produced vegetable oil. Canola meal is one of the most common protein meals on the planet, 2nd only to soy.

First off, there's no such thing as canola meal. The canola plant doesn't actually exist! It's derived from the rapeseed plant which is a member of the mustard family. Researchers found out how to chemically engineer it to meet the FDA standards for human consumption. Rapeseed has significant health risks due to high levels of erucic acid, a monosaturated omega 9. It's found in soaps, lipstick, lip gloss, printer ink, biofuels, insecticides and more!

When it's finally broken down, it's one of the largest contributors to the omega 3 & omega 6 imbalances. The ration of omega 6 to omega 3 should actually be like a 20:1 ratio. That imbalance can cause inflammation, chronic diseases & auto-immune diseases.

It's a GMO & a Canadian invention backed by the Canadian government. It's cheap to produce. Many packaged or process foods contain it. In 1998 the most disease & drought resistant canola variety to date was developed using genetic modification.

A type of vegetable oil, the canola plant was derived from the rapeseed's seeds in order to produce a food grade oil with lower erucic acids. End result is a high omega 6 fat content. Eurcic acid has been linked to heart damage and found in rapeseed & mustard oils. The oil is made by refining, bleaching & deoderizing. A solvent called hexane chemically extracts the oil from seeds.

Over 90% is grown in the U.S. & is genetically modified. It's the 2nd largest oil crop in the world. Aside from small amounts of Vit. E & K, it's devoid of vitamins & minerals. They use high amounts of it to make canola butter which the public thinks is more healthy than regular butter, but it isn't.

Health hazards include increased inflammation, impact on memory & heart health. It's just not a healthy oil to be consuming. There are many other healthy oils out there such as avocado, coconut, olive, ghee, butter, flaxseed, hemp seed & red palm (certified sustainable).

Herbmamahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13684602919033712912noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7546005610900691678.post-59913275483391473082020-07-27T09:17:00.001-07:002021-06-14T09:03:01.453-07:00Echinacea Facts!

So it was bound to happen eventually where I do a blog on the infamous echinacea. There are many more herbs like it out there to help with the same issues....why do people consistantly go to this one herb??? In my research I found there was much more to it than I ever suspected.

Echinacea belongs to the daisy family. There are 9 species of it, but only 3 are used herbally. It's commonly known as the purple coneflower. It has been widely used in natural medicine for over 400 years & widely used by the medical community. It lost most of it's usefulness after antibiotics caused a massive shift in the medical world.

Several of echinacea's chemical constituents include essential oils, Vit. C, inulin, flavanoids & polysaccharides (which trigger immune functions). Research has found that the above ground parts contains most of the plant's health benefits. The German government approved the plant's above ground parts for treatment in upper respiratory infections, colds, UTI's & slow healing wounds.

High in antioxidants such as cichoric acid & rosmarinic acid which help to defend against oxidative stress that can lead to disease.

Benefits of Echinacea:
*Boosts immune system
*Combats viruses
Now, according to research, echinacea works better once symptoms have appeared & it's not to be taken as a preventative. One should only take it up to 10 days, then take a break from it before continuing. Be careful of imitations as there are many out there, unfortunately. Apparently there are products out there that say they contain echinacea & they don't contain any!! The extracts you see everywhere are essentially tinctures, so don't let that fool you either. It's safe & well tolerated for short term use. Use caution against taking too much. Do not use it for seasonal allergies. Use extreme caution against injecting it!

As I've been saying all along, do not take it on a consistent basis. I was not aware though about all the imitations & trickery involved. Again, do your research, ask questions, be aware!!!
Not only the Magi, but the Egyptians used it in their mummification processes because it slowed down decay. It's used in medicine in China & in Jewish religious practices, it's still used today by many. The tree still stands today where the Hebrew & Egyptian peoples walked & are still sharing that awesome healing resin in today's modern day society. Myrrh is Arabic for the word " bitter".

Did you know they burned myrrh with frankincense in biblical times to help purify the air & prevent spread of contagious disease, including ones caused by bacteria??? It is botanically related to the lovely frankincense.

Myrrh is loaded with healing terpenoids which have a reputation as potent healers which even protect the tree from oxidative stress.

Every day science uncovers more of myrrh's potential healing capabilities. It's properties include: antiseptic, anesthetic, anti-tumor, anti-parasitic, anti-oxidant, wound healing & anti-microbial. It's good for oral health, skin infections, inflammation, intestinal health, pain relief, stimulates the immune system, athlete's foot, protects the liver, helps with low thyroid & digestive issues. It can help to calm & relax the mind. There is ongoing research that it fights cancer & in low dilution, myrrh can treat lyme disease as well.

Always dilute before applying to the skin. Do not swallow when using for oral health issues. Avoid if pregnant. Do not take internally. Myrrh may interact with anti-coagulants, may lower blood sugar & blood pressure as well. Be cautious when using it.
Those little guys know what they are doing as bee pollen contains almost all the nutrients the body needs to thrive. It's so healthy for us, the German Federal Board of Health has officially recognized it as a medicine!!!

It's great for natural allergy relief. It contains detoxifying properties. Bee pollen is responsible for the many health benefits of raw honey. It's rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, fatty acids, enzymes, cartenoids & bio-flavanoids. It's anti bacterial, anti fungal & anti viral. This pollen can help strengthens capillaries, reduces inflammation, contains antioxidants, stimulates the immune system & can help to lower cholesterol. It contains more protein than any other animal source. Bee pollen contains about 250 substances including amino acids, lipids, macro & micro nutrients.

It's composed of:
30% digestible carbs
26% sugars (mainly fructose & glucose)
23% proteins which includes 10% of the essential amino acids
5% lipids, including essential fatty acids
2% phenolic compounds
1.6% minerals which include: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, copper, zinc, maganese, silicon & selenium
.6% water soluble vitamins & acids
.1% fat soluble vitamins

Bee pollen can also help protect against liver toxicity, relieve menopausal symptoms, relieve stress, promotes healing especially in burns & it contains anti microbial properties.

Get your bee pollen from reputable sources, free from pesticides & chemicals. Mix it in yogurt, cottage cheese, cereal & baked goods. Add it to smoothies, fruit & veggie juices. If you add it to warm water & let soak 2-3 hours, they crack & release their nutritional value.

If you are allergic to bees, honey, etc. don't ingest it. Avoid if pregnant or on blood thinners.
What could be the reason for the spreading of candida??? Acidic system in the bodies caused by processed foods & the over use of sugars. Antibiotic use. Diabetes. Compromised immune system (HIV, cancer, etc.) When the immune system gets compromised or your body's environment changes, your body changes to favor fungal growth.

Bottom line: eat as healthy as possible & stay away from junk food.

Here are some essential oils that can help with fungal issues:
1) Tea Tree
2) Lavender
3) Thyme
4) Peppermint
5) Geranium
6) Black Pepper
7) Cinnamon Bark
8) Citronella
9) Clove
10) Eucalyptus

Most times you can make a blend in a carrier oil to apply to the body. Very few of these can be taken internally. Although I'm against that, it can prove useful, but be very, very cautious & consult a professional aromatherapist for guidance.
